Information on New District Name Suggestions

Articles of Confederation

The Articles of Confederation is a historical document of the agreement by the 13 founding states to legally establish a national government.  Through reference in the document, the new nation is called the United States of America for the first time.   The Second Continental Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation on November 15, 1777, while meeting in York, PA, which leads to the claim of York being the nation’s first capital.

General Lafayette

General Lafayette, a native of France, served as a major-general in the American Revolutionary War.  Most notably, while in York, General Lafayette is responsible for exposing an attempted plot to remove George Washington as the army’s commander-in-chief.  General Lafayette’s greatest military victory came when keeping British forces from advancing at the Battle of Yorktown.  The plaza where the Colonial Courthouse is located is named Lafayette Plaza in his honor.

Susquehanna Trail

The Susquehanna Trail’s origins date back to the 1700’s and was a major route of travel from York to Harrisburg.  It has had many names over the years including Joppa Road which is still used for a stretch in Southern York County.  Even now as the road winds under and over I-83, there are areas of the road that, while known as the Susquehanna Trail, have other names including George Street, Route 238, State Route 4005, Main Street, Route 295 and Old Trail Road.  The Susquehanna Trail emphasizes the North/South borders of our new district as it winds through many of the towns along I-83.

Final Recommendation for New District Name

Thanks for the great response on coming up with potential names for our new district.  With almost 50 names to choose from it was a difficult task to narrow it down to 3, but we have.  Please review the 3 names selected and email NBOFC.YorkDistrict@gmail.com with your preference.  We need all responses to be received by May 10th so we can get final approval of our new district name which will be announced at Program Launch on June 6th.

You’re invited to the 2012 First Capital District Spring Camporee at Wizard Ranch. This year’s theme is “DISTRICT FEAST.” Patrols will spend Saturday morning in activities that are challenging, informative, and fun revolving around food. Saturday afternoon patrols will spend their time preparing for THE BANQUET! Each unit will have a patrol prepare a main dish, another patrol makes a dessert, and another patrol makes appetizers.

For more information download the 2012 First Capital District Spring Camporee Packet.

If you have questions, contact George Holder at (717)764-0649 or Ken Krause (717)292-3656.

Help Needed: Name Our District

As you know, some adjustments have made to our district boundaries.  Our friends in York Suburban School District will be joining present-day Indian Steps District, and our friends in Northern York County School District will become part of the current Adventure District.  We’ll be welcoming the remainder of the West Shore School District into the current First Capital District.  These changes will take effect on June 1st.

As part of this process, we’re looking for suggestions for a new district name.  Please see this flier for details.  You can submit your ideas to NBOFC.YorkDistrict@gmail.com on or before April 20th.

April 2012 Roundtable Location Change

Our Roundtable Meeting on April 5th at 7 pm will be at the Dover Community Center – 3700 Davidsburg Rd, Dover, PA.  The topic of the evening will be interactions/relationship of Packs and Troops.  We hope to see you there.

Cub Scout Online Training

As anticipated, the BSA has put all Cub Scout leader specific training online.  The new online courses include position specific training for each of the den leader positions (Tigers, Wolfs, Bears, & Webelos) as well as Cubmaster, Pack Trainer, and Pack Committee.

To be considered “trained” a Cub Scout volunteer would need to take the “This is Scouting” course (also available online) and the appropriate position specific course, as well as youth protection.

These courses are available online in the e-learning section of www.myscouting.org.  They went live late yesterday afternoon, but September 1 is the formal kickoff date.

Please take advantage of this new opportunity to become trained to improve the experience of our Scouts.
