Updated July 26 – All Scouters are invited to come on out to see all of the renovations that have been made at the Mechanicsburg Service Center at our open house on Tuesday, August 16 from 6:30 to 8 PM.  Mark your calendar now and be sure to stop by and see how we’ve changed the Service Center to better serve the Scouting community in south-central Pennsylvania.

Refreshments will be available for our guests and there will be a brief ceremony beginning at 7 PM. Hope to see you there!

Background

After being closed for three weeks for extensive renovations throughout the building, the Mechanicsburg Service Center reopened on Monday, July 18

The Mechanicsburg Service Center, which first opened in 1978, serves as the administrative headquarters for the New Birth of Freedom Council and our use of that facility has grown significantly since the merger of the Keystone Area and York-Adams Area councils in April 2010. There are more people working on daily basis in the Mechanicsburg Service Center than there were prior to the council merger and there was a need for increased work space to accommodate these employees.

Additionally, there were a number of maintenance issues that also needed attention, along with an array of major upgrades and other improvements that were needed to allow the Mechanicsburg Service Center to better support quality Scouting programs in south-central Pennsylvania. Essentially, nearly every interior square foot of the building was touched in some way during these renovations.

The work performed in Mechanicsburg included the following items:

  • Replacement of part of the roof, with repairs and new venting occurring to other parts of the roof.
  • Major upgrades to the building’s heating, air-conditioning and ventilation systems.
  • Creation of additional employee workspace in what is currently the large meeting room area.
  • Renovation of bathrooms to add new fixtures and accessories, and installation of a new wheelchair-accessible bathroom.
  • Re-carpeting, painting and addition of new wall coverings throughout the building.
  • Modification of two medium-size meeting rooms, including one with a brand-new kitchen area.
  • Installation of a new wheelchair-accessible ramp to the front lobby entrance.

The funding for the renovations became available through a significant gift from the estate of Marie Altland, who was the daughter of a former York-Adams Area Council president, David E. Horn.

New Birth of Freedom Council President Alan R. Boynton, Jr. said that the improvements at the Mechanicsburg Service Center have created an attractive, contemporary headquarters for the Council that will be extremely functional and reflect the high quality of local Scouting programs.

“The improvements in appearance will certainly be the first thing that visitors notice, but the enhancements to the HVAC and work space throughout the building will provide more optimal working conditions for our staff,” Boynton said. “The building will be much more energy efficient and comfortable for everyone.”
