Scout Troops: Learn More About “The Great Task” Youth Leadership Excursion This Summer at Gettysburg

Dear Educators and Youth Leaders,

Gettysburg National Military Park and Gettysburg Foundation are pleased to announce new opportunities for youth leadership and service through “The Great Task” Youth Leadership Excursion program, this summer and fall at Gettysburg National Military Park. “The Great Task” Excursions are for high schools, youth groups and organizations that are looking to go BEYOND the curriculum-based field trip to explore and most importantly to APPLY leadership lessons from the fields of Gettysburg to their own lives, school and community.

Scout troops are encouraged to learn more about the program at http://www,gettysburgfoundtation.org/288/the-great-taskSpace is limited so don’t delay! To apply, just click on the APPLY button at the bottom of the page or share this information with any other interested youth organizations in your area. Accommodation grants and assistance are available for qualifying groups. See the “Great Task” application for more information.

“The Great Task” initiative is named for a line in President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address from November 19, 1863 when he said:

“It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us – that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion…”

The two-day intensive student leadership experiences investigate the responses of people involved in and affected by the 1863 battle of Gettysburg, and then challenge student groups to apply those experiences to problems in their own lives, schools and communities. In addition, the program provides opportunities for participating students to work with Gettysburg College staff and students to determine their leadership strengths and to further develop those capabilities at the college-level and beyond.

We hope you will share this information with any potential youth organizations and leaders who are ready for an historical experience of a lifetime, and also ready to make changes in their own communities after their “Great Task” excursion in Gettysburg!

If you have any additional questions or would like additional information, please contact Cindy Small at 717-339-2109 or csmall@GettysburgFoundation.org.
