Climbing Instructor Course

The New Birth of Freedom Council will be offering Climbing/COPE  Instructor training courses over two weekends (May 10-12 and May 31-June 2) at Camp Tuckahoe for volunteers, particularly for those individuals who have an interest in staffing council-level climbing events.  Class size is limited to 12 participants both weekends.

COPE & Climbing Foundations will be offered May 10-12 at Camp Tuckahoe. This course includes a mix of classroom and hands-on instruction and is structured to provide training in activity planning, risk management, site operations, safety, rescue techniques, equipment, belaying, climbing, and rappelling. This training prepares the student to run the Climbing Tower at Camp Tuckahoe & Hidden Valley Scout Reservation or other artificial surfaces, teach the Climbing merit badge, and participate as an instructor in future classes. It is intended that participants who successfully complete this class will receive Climbing Level 1 certification.

Climbing – Natural Site will be held May 31-June 2 at Camp Tuckahoe. This course expands on the foundations from the prior weekend and prepares the participant to deliver Climbing and Rappelling events in a natural environment. We will base-camp at Camp Tuckahoe and traveling to the climb site on Saturday and Sunday. This course focuses heavily on natural site considerations and anchoring techniques. Prerequisite: COPE & Climbing Foundations class or current (within 6 months) COPE or Climbing L1 certificate. It is intended that participant who successfully complete this class will receive Climbing Level 2 certification.
