Cub Scout Shooting Sports Update

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) National Shooting Sports Committee updated their Shooting Sports Manual early this year. In this update, they provided some new helpful information regarding Scouting’s shooting sports programs, updated procedures, and some changes to the overall structure of shooting sports in the BSA. As a result of these changes, packs can no longer operate shooting sports activities outside of a Council or District event. This means that packs cannot reserve our BB, archery, or slingshot range at Camp Tuckahoe or Hidden Valley Scout Reservation for use on the weekend. The guide also maintains its initial guideline of not permitting Cub Scout shooting sports activities outside of an accredited Scout camp.

We understand the disruption this causes to the plans many packs make when they come to camp on the weekend. Shooting sports is a highlight of the Scouting program. Because of these changes, our Council Shooting Sports Committee is working on scheduling Shooting Sports Days at Camp Tuckahoe and Hidden Valley Scout Reservation. These days would be open to units camping in camp that weekend and to units that would like to come up to camp for the day for a shooting sports day activity. As these days are scheduled, we will be sure to publish them on our website, social media accounts, and newsletters. To help make these Shooting Sports Days a success, we will also be recruiting adult leaders that are already trained Rangemaster or are willing to become trained Rangemasters to support these unique programs for our Scouts.

Troops, crews, ships, and teams can still reserve our rifle and shotgun ranges at Camp Tuckahoe and Hidden Valley Scout Reservation if they can provide the appropriately trained personnel to open the range. We are currently working on updating our Range Request Form to reflect these changes and will be sharing the completed form soon. If you would like to reserve a range before the form is complete, please email us at the email address below.

If you have any questions about these changes or upcoming shooting sports activities, you can reach out to our Camping Department at camping@newbirthoffreedom.org.
