War – Civil War – has shaken up the countryside in Gettysburg! Over 3 long days in July, countless Union soldiers were lost in a hard-fought and bittersweet victory over the Southern Johnny Rebs. After attending President Lincoln’s stirring Gettysburg Address, you have decided to join your local regiment of the Union army to help put an end to this war. Your local regiment is the PA 150th and they will be hosting an enlistment weekend in the end of September 1864.
The Battlefield and Heritage Trails Districts will be hosting a camporee themed around enlisting in the PA 150th in 1864. Scouts BSA Troops, Venture Crews, Sea Scout Ships, and Cub Scout Pack AOL dens are invited to attend a weekend-long camporee whose program will put them through the basic drill instruction and firearm handling, in addition to many other contemporary activities. As part of this submergence into the experience, we are also asking all scouts to have a mock Springfield Rifle, plans and pictures for which can be found below. Rifles can be produced by either the unit, or ordered on Tentaroo at $5/rifle (orders MUST be placed before September 2 to give our contractor time to produce them).
*PLEASE NOTE THAT ONLY MOCK SPRINGFIELD RIFLES PRODUCED BY THE PLANS PROVIDED WILL BE ALLOWED AT THIS EVENT — ABSOLUTELY NO REAL/FUNCTIONAL FIREARMS, PELLET GUNS, OR ANY OTHER REPLICA WILL BE PERMITTED*
Cub Scout Pack families are also welcome to either camp for the weekend or attend for the day on Saturday to experience a program built around games/activities that kids of the 1860’s would do while their brothers and fathers were off fighting in the Civil War.
Every participant will receive a complementary patch and kepi (hat) with their registration fee. Additional patches are available for purchase through Tentaroo for $2 a piece, but must be ordered before the registration fee increase.
There is an option for Scouts BSA Troops, Venture Crews, and Sea Scout Ships to go on a 2-mile hike Sunday morning after being dismissed from their campsite for an additional $4/scouter. This historical hike will be given by a licensed Tour Guide, and is generally unavailable through other hiking programs. Because of the nature of the hike, it will not be available to Cub Scout Packs.
We’ll post an updated Leader’s Guide in the Spring of 2022
