Karns Popcorn and Nuts Show and Sell Program

We are excited to announce the partnership with Karns Food Stores!   Due to COVID-19, Karns Food Stores are unable to allow Scouts to stand out front of their stores for traditional popcorn and nuts Show and Sells.  However, they are providing a 3 foot space in the produce section of ALL 9 Karns Food Stores for Scouts to sell Popcorn and Nuts.  Registration opens September 1 at NOON. 

How does it work?

When is this happening?

 We are going to be in all 9 locations for 4 weeks staring September 11.  Your unit can sign up for a week at a time.  The weeks are:

  • Friday, September 11 – Thursday, September 17
  • Friday, September 18 – Thursday, September 24
  • Friday, September 25 – Thursday, October 1
  • Friday, October 2 – Thursday, October 8

What is my unit responsible for?

Your unit is responsible for stocking your space in your Karns store between 7 and 10am on the Friday morning that your week starts.  You must remove any unsold product by the time the store closes on the Thursday at the end of your week.  During your selected week, your unit is responsible for checking and restocking product throughout the week.  It would be a great idea to work a schedule so that the display can be restocked daily and potentially checked multiple times during the weekend.  You can’t sell product if it isn’t there!

Scouts are NOT permitted to stand at your display but your unit is encouraged to tell YOUR story.  Bring pictures and posters of exciting Scouting adventures and leave information about how to join your local Scouting unit.  

Encourage friends, family, neighbors to come out to your local Karns store and purchase delicious popcorn and nuts products!

What product do I use?  Do I pull from Show and Sell?  Do I submit a Consignment Order?  What if I didn’t sign up for Show and Sell can I participate?

When you sign up, we will be in contact with you about picking up a “Karns Kit” from either the York or Mechanicsburg Service Centers.  Customers will purchase products just like anything else in the grocery store so we have to be specific about what products we offer so that Karns can load the appropriate bar codes for ease of tracking sales.  Your “Karns Kit” will include:

  • Troops Salted Virginia Peanuts
  • Troops Honey Roasted Virginia Peanuts
  • 14 pack Summer Roasted Corn Microwavable Popcorn
  • Cheddar Cheese Tin
  • Caramel Corn Bag

Do NOT pull additional product from your Show and Sell or Consignment orders (we CANNOT change the product mix from what is listed above).  If your product starts to get low, please contact your District Executive, District Kernel, or Holly Schwalm right away and we will get you additional product.

This is open to any unit participating in the Popcorn and Nuts Sale.  If your unit did not specifically sign up for Show and Sell and was only planning to do Take Order, you can sign up for a week as long as you commit the the responsibilities that are listed above.  

Can my Scouts stand at our display during store operating hours?

No.  Karns Food Stores is providing this opportunity to help keep our Scouts, families, Karns employees, and customers all safe during these uncertain times.  We know that Scouts being involved in the process is important to their own development but safety is paramount and we are grateful for this accommodation that Karns made to help support our local Scouting programs.

Can I sign up for more than one week or more than one location?

Not initially.  There are essentially 36 “weeks” so 36 opportunities for Scouting units.  We ask that units only sign up for one slot (i.e. 1 location and 1 week).  If there are additional opportunities we announce those and allow others to sign up.  We also ask that you sign up for your “local” Karns.  We don’t want units from Dallastown trying to sign up for weeks at the Karns in New Bloomfield.  At that point the program is not benefitting Scouting locally and it will become challenging for the unit to make sure that the store remains stocked.  

How will my Scouts/Unit receive credit for sales?

Customers will pick up product just like they would pick up any other groceries at the store.  They will take it to the check out and pay for it as part of their overall order.  Karns will track all of the sales that are made during your week.  Units must provide a contact person for their unit who will receive notification from Karns when the check for products sold is ready to pick up.  Checks will be ready for pick up approximately 2 weeks after your week of sales.
