Wood Badge is Scouting America’s premier leadership training course for adult volunteers, combining more than a century of Scouting tradition with modern leadership models used by successful organizations today.
Drawing on proven leadership theory and team development practices, Wood Badge builds upon the best traditions of Scouting. Participants gain tools that apply directly to their roles as Scout leaders while also benefiting their families, workplaces, and communities.
Scouters who attend Wood Badge develop practical skills such as effective listening, clear communication, conflict management, project planning, and leading change. The course also deepens understanding of diversity and helps leaders deliver stronger, more meaningful programs for youth. Throughout the experience, participants internalize the five themes of Wood Badge: Living the Values, Growing, Connecting, Guiding, and Empowering.
Wood Badge is designed for all Scouters, especially those serving at the unit level, including Cub Scout leaders, Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters, and unit committee members. Scouters at the district and council levels will also benefit.
The New Birth of Freedom Council’s Wood Badge course will be held from Thursday, August 13 through Monday, August 17, 2026. The course fee is $320 if paid in full by July 1, 2026, increasing to $370 after that date. The fee includes all meals, instructional materials, and recognitions. A $75 non-refundable deposit reserves your place. Financial aid is available from the Friends of Wood Badge, and other sources including many units that invest in their leadership. Participation is limited to 48 Scouters, so early registration is strongly encouraged.
If you’re ready to grow as a leader, strengthen your Scouting skills, and better serve youth, Wood Badge is the next step in your Scouting journey. For more information, contact Course Director Chuk Gutshall at (717) 320-2948 or Council Training Committee Advisor Roger Chatell at (717) 620-4515.
