STEM – Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Opportunities

We are currently looking for adult volunteers to help set up STEM labs in all 6 districts!  If you are interested in volunteering with a STEM lab in your area, contact the STEM and Exploring District Executive at Rebekah.Schardt@scouting.org for more information.  There are several different ways to help:

The Sponsoring Organization Representative is the direct contact between the Lab and the sponsoring organization. This individual is also the organization’s contact with the local council and with the Lab Manager and Associate Lab Managers.

The Lab Manager should be a leader who is able to communicate well with adults as well as with youth. They should be able to delegate responsibilities and set a good example through behavior, attitude, and uniform.  The Lab Manager should have a love of science, but does not have to be a STEM professional (though it may be helpful for middle and high school labs).

The Lab Manager has a big role. Having Associate Lab Managers allows him or her to share responsibilities.  Every lab should have at least two Associate Lab Managers so there is plenty of assistance during meetings.  The Lab Manager and the Associate Lab Manager are responsible for the youth and the Lab.  The Associate Lab Manager leads the Lab in the absence of the Lab Manager and assists the Lab Manager as is required for smooth and efficient functioning.

A STEP Volunteer is a short term experienced professional who helps with one or more weekly Lab activities (often a module) related to their field of expertise; helps with an outing; and/or hosts STEM Scouts to visit their facilities.
