Shadows of 1864 Camporee – Wooden Replica Springfield Rifles Are Essential

In preparation for the upcoming “Shadows of 1864” event, it is essential for each participant to have a wooden replica Springfield rifle. This item is a central part of the event and a symbol of the soldier’s responsibility during the period. The Springfield rifle was consistently by the soldier’s side, and it is imperative that each participant has one for the “School of the Soldier – Manual of Arms and Drill” activity.

Event Participation and Rifle Handling: Both Scouts BSA and Cub Scouts will be forming groups, or “Companies,” and each participant will be assigned a rifle. These rifles, though non-functional, must be treated with the utmost respect and care as if they were actual firearms. Participants will be instructed on how to properly handle the rifles—this includes lifting, carrying, laying down, and maneuvering them as a unit. We will conclude the day’s activities with a camp-wide parade, where participants can showcase their newly learned skills.

Springfield Rifle Decoration Competition: Additionally, we are hosting a replica Springfield decoration competition. This competition will feature three different categories for Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, and Adults. Participants are encouraged to create the most realistic representation of the Springfield rifle from the period.

Sizes and Ordering: There are two sizes of wooden replica Springfields: a 3-foot version for Cub Scouts and a 5-foot version for Scouts BSA and Adults. These replicas are available for pre-order through Tentaroo for $8 (3-foot) and $10 (5-foot). Please note that only those who have made a reservation for the event may order these replicas. They will not be shipped, but a designated pick-up day will be arranged each month at Camp Tuckahoe.

Due to production by a local vendor, these rifles are made to order, and no inventory is maintained. It is highly recommended that you place your order as soon as possible to allow time for decoration over the summer. All orders for pre-cut wood replicas must be received by July 1, 2025, to ensure the vendor can fulfill all orders before the event.

Alternative – Making Your Own Replica: If you prefer to craft your own replica, the necessary plans are available on the NBOFC website. You will need to print the template and trace it onto a 2×6 or 2×8 board, depending on how many replicas you are making. Please note that only these specific designs are allowed for the event.
