To the New Birth of Freedom Council Scouting Family,
I’m excited to share that the final phase is underway for our soon-to-be-completed new council service center at Camp Tuckahoe! This project marks a significant milestone for our Scouting community – bringing renewed energy, improved access, and enhanced support for volunteers and families. More than just a building, the new service center represents our commitment to strengthening Scouting now and into the future in south-central Pennsylvania.
Centralized Access
If we were starting our council from scratch today and could choose any location, we’d most likely pick the heart of our service area. Camp Tuckahoe is that sweet spot – perfectly positioned to serve our volunteers and families from all directions. Relocating the service center to this central location will enhance accessibility across our six-county region, making it easier for volunteers to connect with staff, access key resources, and participate in training and meetings, all within the trusted and motivating setting of camp.
Financial Responsibility and Strategic Stewardship
Recovering from our council’s $2.7 million contribution to the Boy Scouts of America’s bankruptcy resolution is a key priority. By consolidating our two previous service centers, we eliminate duplicate operating costs and become better stewards of our resources. These savings can now be reinvested where they matter most – improving Scouting programs, enhancing our camps, and creating enriching experiences for the youth we serve.
Enhancing Summer Camp Programs and Operations
One of our council’s key priorities is enhancing the quality of our summer camp programs and improving the financial performance of our camp operations. By placing the new service center at Camp Tuckahoe, our full-time staff will be better positioned to provide on-the-ground support and oversight, leading to a more efficient and successful summer camp experience for all.
Expanded Services
The new service center will proudly house a National Scout Shop, offering a comprehensive selection of uniforms, advancement items, camping gear, and other essential Scouting supplies. It will be the go-to spot for Scouting families and leaders to find everything they need to stay on track with their programs and activities. From uniforms and badges to gear for outdoor adventures, the Scout Shop will be a convenient one-stop shop for all Scouting essentials.
A Sustainable Transformation
The renovation of the historic dining hall at Camp Tuckahoe breathes new life into a building that had fallen into disrepair, saving it from the landfill it was likely headed toward. This transformation honors the building’s legacy, preserving its history while creating a functional, modern space that will serve Scouts and volunteers for years to come.
Looking Ahead
While we remain proud of our history, we must focus on the future. Today’s challenges require forward-thinking solutions, and this new service center reflects that mindset. It positions our council to adapt, grow, and deliver the best possible experience for all we serve.
