Honoring the Service and Sacrifice of Fallen Officers

To the New Birth of Freedom Council Scouting Family:

It is with heavy hearts that we pay tribute to Detective Mark Baker of the Northern York County Regional Police Department. Mark was lost in a line-of-duty incident on Wednesday. For Scouting, this loss is very personal.

Mark – Mr. Baker to many of our Scouts – was a Cubmaster for eight years, an Assistant Scoutmaster for seven years, a current Pack Committee Chair, and Advisor to the Northern York County Regional Police Department Explorer Post. Mark was an Eagle Scout who influenced many young lives with his kindness and mentorship through Scouting.

In addition to losing Mark, York County lost two other detectives, and an additional officer and a deputy sheriff are fighting to recover from wounds suffered in the same incident. Our Council grieves for the loss to the respective departments, their families, and the community as a whole. We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to those willing to serve and protect our community.

There will be tributes and memorials in the following weeks. For any Scout or Scout leader affiliated with Mr. Baker, we do have counseling services available for you. Now is the time to lean on each other.
