An Eagle Scout, Ray’s long and distinguished service as a Scouting volunteer dates back to 1975, when he became an Assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 196, chartered to the Mechanicsburg American Legion Post 109.
Over the years, Ray has served in many different roles, including Scoutmaster for Troop 91, chartered to the Liverpool Lions Club in Liverpool, PA, from 1993 to 1998.
A 1988 recipient of the District Award of Merit, Ray’s district and council-level service includes many years as a Unit Commissioner, Assistant District Commissioner, and his current role as an Assistant Council Commissioner. Ray received the Commissioner Arrowhead Honor in 1986, the Distinguished Commissioner Service Award in 1988, and a doctorate in commissioner science in 1989.
Ray served as troop Scoutmaster at the 1989 National Scout Jamboree as part of the Keystone Area Council’s contingent. He also served as a member of the subcamp staff at the 1997 National Jamboree. In 2005, Ray was a leader for the KAC’s Philmont contingent.
A Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, Ray’s service to Scouting also includes serving as a merit badge counselor at 11 different merit badge colleges. Ray has also served on the staff and faculty for many different training courses, including Boy Scout Leader Basic, Junior Leader Training, Den Leader Workshops, and a National Order of the Arrow Conference.
Ray received the George Meany Award in 1992, presented by the Teamsters AFO-CIO. This award recognizes union members who have made a significant contribution to the youth of their communities by volunteering in the Boy Scouts of America programs.
Ray is a life member of the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity, where he has been active for the past 44 years.
