In preparation for the upcoming “Shadows of 1864” event, it is essential for each participant to have a wooden replica Springfield rifle. This item is a central part of the event and a symbol of the soldier’s responsibility during the period. The Springfield rifle was consistently by the soldier’s side, and it is imperative that each participant has one for the “School of the Soldier – Manual of Arms and Drill” activity.
Event Participation and Rifle Handling: Both Scouts BSA and Cub Scouts will be forming groups, or “Companies,” and each participant will be assigned a rifle. These rifles, though non-functional, must be treated with the utmost respect and care as if they were actual firearms. Participants will be instructed on how to properly handle the rifles—this includes lifting, carrying, laying down, and maneuvering them as a unit. We will conclude the day’s activities with a camp-wide parade, where participants can showcase their newly learned skills.
Springfield Rifle Decoration Competition: Additionally, we are hosting a replica Springfield decoration competition. This competition will feature three different categories for Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, and Adults. Participants are encouraged to create the most realistic representation of the Springfield rifle from the period.
Sizes and Ordering: There are two sizes of wooden replica Springfields: a 3-foot version for Cub Scouts and a 5-foot version for Scouts BSA and Adults. These replicas are available for pre-order through Tentaroo for $8 (3-foot) and $10 (5-foot). Please note that only those who have made a reservation for the event may order these replicas. They will not be shipped, but a designated pick-up day will be arranged each month at Camp Tuckahoe.
Due to production by a local vendor, these rifles are made to order, and no inventory is maintained. It is highly recommended that you place your order as soon as possible to allow time for decoration over the summer. All orders for pre-cut wood replicas must be received by July 1, 2025, to ensure the vendor can fulfill all orders before the event.
Alternative – Making Your Own Replica: If you prefer to craft your own replica, the necessary plans are available on the NBOFC website. You will need to print the template and trace it onto a 2×6 or 2×8 board, depending on how many replicas you are making. Please note that only these specific designs are allowed for the event.

Where is the event being held?
965 Pumping Station Rd, Gettysburg, PA 17325
Is this location on the Gettysburg National Military Park battlefield?
No, it is adjacent to the Gettysburg National Military Park. The address is approximately 0.9 miles from Sachs Covered Bridge and 2.2 miles from Eisenhower Farm.
When is the registration deadline?
Until September 5, 2025 or we sell out of all available spots.
What is the cancellation refund policy?
All payments are non-refundable. The event has been created with a cap on participation so each spot sold is a spot that is gone. Financial commitments are being made based on registrations to hold this activity. Units should carefully consider registrations based on what they can fill.
Is food provided or do we cook as a unit?
This will be your choice. Food vendors will be available onsite so you can purchase or cook within your assigned campsite.
Must all adults participating in the event be Scouting America registered leaders ?
Adult leadership guidelines as outlined in Scouting America’s Guide to Safe Scouting apply. All youth and adults participating must register and submit the required registration fee.
How do I sign up to serve as a member of the event staff?
Interested adult volunteers can sign up to serve on the event staff.
Are Scouting America field uniforms needed for this event?
We encourage all youth and adults to embrace the spirit of the era by dressing in 1860s period attire. A simple long-sleeve white or flannel shirt paired with blue jeans offers an easy and authentic look—please avoid bright or flashy colors, as they were not typical of the time.
Every registered youth participant will receive a Kepi hat upon arrival as a special keepsake.
Can you provide times that the program starts on Friday and ends on Sunday?
Units/vendors/staff will be moving in on Friday. We will have things going on Friday evening. The program will go from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with fireworks on Saturday evening. On Sunday, there is no program as everyone leaves for home.
Will there be a program specifically for the Cub Scouts?
Yes. A dedicated Cub Scout program will offer age-appropriate activities, such as candle making, period games, Civil War encampment exploration, music, cooking, soldier drill practice, and a cavalry competition.
Will there be reenactors at this event?
Yes. We have the full support of the Federal Volunteer Brigade (FVB) in assisting with our program. We anticipate over 100 reenactors who will be providing “living history”.
In addition to being a Scout Leader, I am also a Civil War reenactor. May I have permission to dress as a reenactor?
Yes. We encourage you to register as staff once the staff registration opens. All reenactors will report to the Federal Volunteer Brigade (FVB). For specifics, contact Tom Steckbeck at tsteckbeck@aeroenergy.com.
Will all of the participants need a wooden replica gun?
It is highly encouraged. Everyone will be able to participate in some level of field “drill.” Anyone without a wooden blank Springfield Rifle will feel left out. There are two styles: a 5’ Springfield for Scouts BSA and a 3’ Springfield for Cub Scouts. Both are available for pre-order. If you would like to make your own, detailed instructions are available at the link below.
I have a real Springfield rifle, can I use that?
NO. Pre-cut wood replicas (5′ long) will be available for $10. 3′ long pre-cut wood replicas (intended for Cub Scout use) will be available for $8.
Templates and instructions for those who wish to make their own from scratch are available below:
NOTE: No real firearms are allowed on the property by any adult or youth participant.
Can we add a bayonet?
No. No other accouterments may be added to the mock rifle.
I see Civil War photographs of soldiers and reenactors that have swords. Can we make or bring swords?
NO. No swords will be allowed for any adult or youth participants.
If I purchase a mock Springfield rifle, will they be delivered?
No. Once the mock rifles are ready, we will announce distribution days once a month at Camp Tuckahoe for folks to pick up pre-orders.
Are we allowed to have fires?
No. Open fires will not be allowed.
We have individuals that require power for C-PAP machines, is there electricity available?
No. Where we are located is an active farm. There will be no electricity available.
Can we bring our own generator for electricity?
No. People need to consider battery power or no power at all.
Is there water readily available?
Yes. That said, units are encouraged to bring water from home. Water will be available through “water buffaloes,” which will be on the property but not necessarily adjacent to your campsite. Be prepared by bringing your water, and expect to have to haul water from a distance to supplement your initial supply.
