An Eagle Scout, Matt Phillips began volunteering as an adult in 2016, serving as a den leader for Pack 79, chartered to St. James Lutheran Church in Gettysburg, PA. In the years since, Matt has astounded his volunteer colleagues with his deep commitment to Scouting, especially in the number of roles he held concurrently.
At the unit level, Matt progressed to Assistant Cubmaster in Pack 79, then serving as Cubmaster for three years. At that point, Matt became an Assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 79, before stepping into his current role as the troop’s Scoutmaster for the past three years.
He is also an assistant crew advisor for Crew 42, chartered to Lower Bermudian Lutheran Church in East Berlin, PA.
Matt first got involved at the district level in 2019, serving as Battlefield District’s popcorn chair and district finance vice-chair. He has also served as the district’s Friends of Scouting chair, merit badge counselor, and NOVA Awards Counselor, and he currently serves as District Commissioner.
A recipient of the District Award of Merit in 2022, Matt has also served on several training courses, notably BALOO and IOLS, sharing his knowledge and experiences to help other leaders. He also served as the Council contingent’s Venture Crew Advisor at the 2023 National Jamboree.
Professionally, Matt is a Facilities Manager at Freedom Valley Church, where he also volunteers as a Sunday school teacher for middle/junior high-age youth. Matt has arranged for the church to be available for numerous Scouting activities and events.
Mat also served as a volunteer summer camp staff member at Camp Tuckahoe in 2022, stepping up to help resolve a counselor shortage at the camp.
