Scouting America has announced significant changes to membership and unit renewals that will take effect beginning later this year.
These changes represent one of the most significant membership administration updates in recent years and are designed to:
- Create a more streamlined and predictable experience for volunteers, families, units, and councils.
- Return responsibility for member renewals to units.
- Transition all members and units to a common February renewal cycle by February 2028.
To help units prepare for these changes, we are sharing key information about what is changing, important implementation dates, and steps unit leaders should begin taking now.

Membership Grace Period Ending
One of the most significant changes is the elimination of the current membership grace period, which has allowed members to remain active for a period of time after their renewal date.
The phase-out will occur during the final months of 2026:
- Members with an October 2026 renewal date will be the last to receive the full 60-day grace period.
- Members with a November 2026 renewal date will receive a 30-day grace period through December 2026.
- Members with a December 2026 renewal date will receive no grace period and must renew by December 31, 2026, to avoid being dropped from membership.
Beginning January 1, 2027, members must maintain current registration to remain active in Scouting America.
Transition to a Common February Renewal Cycle
Scouting America will transition all members and units to a common February renewal cycle by February 2028. Key changes include:- Beginning in September 2026, all units due for renewal will renew through February 2028.
- By February 2028, all memberships and unit charters will share a common February renewal date.
- Units will once again be responsible for renewing their members during the unit renewal process. After the unit renewal period closes, members not renewed by their unit will have the opportunity to renew individually.
Unit Renewal Fees During the Transition
Beginning in September 2026, new and renewing units will pay the standard annual charter fee plus a monthly pro-rated fee through February 2028 as part of the transition to a common renewal cycle.
There are no changes to membership fees for new or renewing members during 2026.
