We are pleased to announce that the Executive Board elected Mike Hassell as our new Council Commissioner at its September 15 meeting. Mike brings more than 40 years of Scouting experience and a distinguished record of service at the unit, district, council, and regional levels.
Mike’s Scouting journey began as a youth in northeastern Pennsylvania, where he completed a 50-Miler on the Loyalsock Trail and attended Camp Brule as a provisional troop camper. He returned to Scouting in 1988 as a Tiger Cub parent with Pack 195 in Mechanicsburg and later had the privilege of watching his son, Chris, earn the Eagle Scout Award. Along the way, Mike completed a second 50-Miler by canoe with Troop 195 on the Juniata and Susquehanna Rivers and participated in a Scouting adventure at West Point.
Throughout his Scouting career, Mike has served in numerous leadership positions, including Committee Chair for Troop 195, Unit Commissioner, District Commissioner, Pioneer District Committee Chair, and Pioneer District Membership Chair. At the council and regional levels, he has served as Council Training Chair, Northeast Region Area 6 Training Coordinator, and most recently as our Council’s Vice President for Program.
A proud Bobwhite from Wood Badge course NEVI-64, Mike has continued to support Scouting through Wood Badge service in a variety of roles, culminating in his selection as Scoutmaster and Course Director for N6-544-17. In recognition of his outstanding service to Scouting, he has received both the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver Award.
Now retired, Mike and his wife, Mary, reside in Mechanicsburg, where they enjoy traveling, raising service dogs in training for Susquehanna Service Dogs, and cheering on their granddaughter, Elle, who earned the Eagle Scout Award this year.
As Council Commissioner, Mike’s goal is to help Scouting grow by building and leading the strongest commissioner service team possible. Please join us in congratulating Mike on his election and wishing him every success in this important leadership role.
