Scouting America’s Commitment to Safely

In Scouting, we uphold a firm commitment to the safety of our youth, volunteers, and employees. Ensuring safety is a core value that must be consistently taught and reinforced. Our collective responsibility is to uphold this standard and ensure a secure environment for all participants. Our dedication to abuse prevention is reflected in our implementation of:

  • Mandatory youth protection training.
  • Comprehensive criminal background checks.
  • Prohibition of one-on-one interactions between adults and youth.
  • Required reporting of suspected abuse to law enforcement.
  • Utilization of a volunteer screening database.

Our commitment to preventing injury and illness is embedded in our handbooks, literature, and training materials, including the Guide to Safe Scouting. We expect our leaders to adhere to the SAFE principles when conducting activities:

  • Youth are Supervised by qualified and trustworthy adults who model safe behavior.
  • Activities are Assessed for potential risks.
  • Pre-requisite Fitness and Skill levels are verified before participation.
  • Appropriate Equipment is used, and Environmental conditions are monitored.

In the event of an incident, we require timely, clear, and comprehensive incident reporting. We are dedicated to analyzing this data and updating our program guidance to prevent future occurrences.
