Families invited to experience Scouting at Capital City Mall on Sunday, Sept. 27
Families looking to learn more about Scouting will have a chance to experience it firsthand when the New Birth of Freedom Council brings a full slate of hands-on activities to Capital City Mall on Sunday, Sept. 27.
The event will give boys, girls and their families an opportunity to explore Scouting through some of its most recognizable and engaging activities. Current Scouts are also encouraged to attend, bring their Pinewood Derby cars to race and invite a friend to come experience what Scouting is all about.
At Center Court, children can take part in Pinewood Derby racing. Those who do not have a car can build one using plastic bricks and race it down the track, while current Scouts are invited to bring their own Pinewood Derby cars for another run.
Beyond the track, families can explore a model Scout campsite, meet local Cub Scout Packs and Scout Troops, and try practical Scout skills at activity stations throughout the mall. Older Scouts will be on hand to demonstrate skills including first aid and lashings and give younger visitors an opportunity to try them for themselves.
“Scouting is best understood by experiencing it,” said Brian DeBease, Director of Development for the New Birth of Freedom Council. “This is a chance for families to come out, have some fun and see firsthand the kinds of experiences that help young people build confidence, learn new skills and discover what they’re capable of.”
The event is designed to introduce families to the breadth of experiences available through Scouting. From racing and camping to outdoor skills, service and leadership, Scouting gives young people opportunities to discover new interests, build confidence and develop skills they can carry with them throughout their lives.
For current Scouts, the event is also a chance to share that experience with someone new. Bring a friend, race your Derby car and help introduce another family to the adventure of Scouting.
Families will also be able to meet Scouts, parents and volunteer leaders from local units, ask questions and learn more about Scouting opportunities in their own communities.
No previous Scouting experience is required.
